MIDDLE HEAD ON SYDNEY HARBOUR

is easily accessible by car or bus and is located close to the leafy suburb of Mosman on Sydney's north side.

There is a makeshift car park located on the corner of Middle Head Road & Chowder Bay Road which is only a few hundred metres form the gates into Cobbler's Beach Reserve. These gates lead you to the headland of Middle Head.
Middle Head is quite a spectacular place to view the goings on of what is still a working harbour. This is also one of the best places to view the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race (Boxing Day) as the colourful vessels  jockey for position for the run down the south coast.
Not the day to visit if you want a quiet picnic!

The first time I visited Middle Head was only fairly recently. Even though I have lived in Sydney all my life my first visit was a bare two years ago.

From the carpark you turn right and walk along Middle Head Road past the old hospital buildings and vacant lots of the old navy base. It's a straight level walk to the entrance to the reserve where the track slopes gently down to the old gun emplacements which are worth a visit in their own right.

Just beyond the gun emplacements are a couple of open grassy areas which have magnificent views from the Spit Bridge all the way around to the city and the skyline beyond. The sweep takes in at least 270 degrees with North Head slightly to the left and the Tasman Sea directly in front of you.

As you swing around to the right you can clearly see Camp Cove just in from South Head, and follow the harbour all the way back to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Opera House and beyond.

You can sit there for hours watching the ferries and pleasure craft, as well as the thrill seekers on the jet boats that come out from near the Opera House or Darling Harbour.

The day I was there was very peaceful. There was a small group of artists spread out through the area, with their easels and paint brushes, no doubt suitably inspired by the panoramic vista. Apart from the artists there were only three or four people there.

It is now one of my favoured spots as well and I only wish I had discovered it earlier in my life.

Sydney will continue to surprise me as I'm sure there are many more similar treasures undiscovered by me.

I work at Lane Cove River Tourist Park and we specialise in advising guests how to fill in the time they spend with us.

It always gives me great pleasure to suggest activities for people, especially those who have little idea of the diversity that can be found in Sydney.

I have so many places that people can visit that I feel I could be writing articles like this for a long time to come!
